Admission Requirements

As stated in Goal 6 of the Philosophy, the school seeks to provide a learning environment that will ensure success for each child. In order to provide for individual needs, it is necessary to know the child’s previous academic achievement and progress, his/her daily attendance and on-time arrival at school, and his/her ability to conform to standard rules of courtesy and self-control. This information is derived from the previous school’s transfer, report card and other school data. It is expected that a child seeking enrollment will have this information available.
If the information predicts that the child will be successful at St. Thomas More School in a regular class setting, the child will be enrolled. If any other factors listed above indicates that success is doubtful and/or if special education placement has been recommended to meet his/her educational needs, the application for enrollment will not be approved.

Children of parishioners. To become a registered parishioner, one must be Catholic, should live within the parish, and register at the Rectory. The parish boundaries have traditionally been considered to be Western to Kedzie/75th to 87th Street. Catholic children from contiguous neighborhoods will be granted further consideration.

The school may admit students who are non-Catholic provided that these students will not displace Catholic students and that both students and parents clearly understand that participation in Catholic religious instruction and school activities related to the Catholic identity of the school is required. (Archdiocese Policy 313) Non-Catholic students must also live within the parish boundaries noted above. The Pastor may make exceptions in certain circumstances for spiritual reasons.

Parent/legal guardians must present two proofs of residence within the parish boundaries at the time of registration. Documents accepted for verification of residence include driver’s license, an electric, gas or real estate tax bill showing the parent’s/legal guardian’s name pre-printed on the document. If the child is not residing with the parent, proof of legal guardianship must be presented at the time of registration.

If a family moves out of the parish boundaries during the school year, the child/children may complete the current year at St. Thomas More School.
Exceptions
If an eighth grade student moves before the school year begins, he/she may finish grade 8 at St. Thomas More if the family wishes. If the Pastor deems it beneficial for the spiritual welfare of the family their formal request to remain may be granted.

All students must present a report card and up-to-date Medical records before they will be considered for admission.
Kindergarten – Illinois state law requires that the child be five years of age by September 1st for admission to preschool.
